Miracle Workers - Series Premiere Discussion

Miracle Workers

Premise: While God (Steve Buscemi) is busy with his hobbies, it's up to low-level angel Craig (Daniel Radcliffe) and his fellow angels in the Department of Prayer Response to deal with all of humanity's prayers in this comedy series from Simon Rich and based on his book, What in God's Name.

This show is atrociously bad

Not sure if they keep being interesting and get the groove but daniel radcliffe is a good sign. He has an aquired taste for dark comedies.

I liked it!

Got a few laugh out louds from me, which is good, normally I don't laugh out loud when watching anything solo.

This has got me more hooked 1 episode in than most other series I start.

level 1

I just watched the first episode and I really really enjoyed it. I didn't who Geraldine Viswanathan was before this but she's pretty easy to root for, Harry fucking Potter is an Angel (btw man has he improved as an actor), old Drunk Nucky Thompson is playing God! The romance aspect that I've seen a few people (not a lot but some) hate on in this comment thread really makes me wonder who hurt you guys?? Also I've never seen the Good Place, the only reason why I tried this out is cuz of Buscemi and Radcliffe && that it came on after the NBA Rookie Showcase thingy and I was glad I stuck around

Does that mean you haven't seen Daniel Radcliffe in anything since Harry Potter?

level 3

It's funny you mention that, I actually had not seen the Harry Potter movies till a recent binge watch session so those performances are still kind of fresh in my head. The last thing I saw him in was a short series where he played the younger version of a drugged out doctor in Russia with John Hamm. Pretty good actor this Radcliffe bloke

why?

level 1

I enjoyed the first episode.

How can you not like a show where "F7!" becomes a punchline?

level 1

They put it up on Youtube. I like it. I'm getting Dead Like Me vibes.

i thought it was pretty good

I like the humor enough and the setting is is a little more fleshed out in a famtasy direction that I enjoy. It’s just directly competing with The Good Place as a concept and just doesn’t really match up. Yeah the stories as they are now are pretty similar. Higher beings playing match maker to prove the value of humanity. Going straight into that just kind of falls flat. I feel like they could spend more time on other impossible prayers.

I enjoyed this much better as a first episode than the Good Place.

level 2

I agree. I was onboard with watching more until they set up this premise of needing to make two people fall in love. I’m not particularly interested in watching a whole season of that, especially when having The Good Place already.

They could always get interesting subploty, but the good place being there now is a high standard. Lets see if the series gets compelling character arcs.

Also the plot reminds me a bit on the satirical funny book "heaven help us", where god wants to destroy the world but petrus andanother guy can convince him to just go on vacation. Then they pick a finnish guy that uses prayers to god while cursing, shinanigans follow. I like it, its not too long and if you get the chance read it. He has other somehoe deep, meaningful but funny and satirical books too. Arto Paasalini is the autors name.

The plot isnt exactly new, but if they can have a meaningful subplot it might work.

Saw the YouTube premiere and loved it. All the actors are great and show how much range the main 4 have. Karan Soni is much more competent than he is in Deadpool and the AT&T commercials. Daniel Radcliffe is fantastic as always, and has a good knack for physical comedy. Geraldine Viswanathan is very likable and completely unlike her Blockers character. And Steve Buscemi just cracked me up.

Will definitely watch the whole season.

They have a working relationship with Simon Rich since he made Man Seeking Woman for FX. It's super common for production companies linked to channels to make shows for other channels and services. Daredevil whilst being a Netflix show is produced by ABC Studios.

level 2

No idea, but FXP has produced shows for other networks before. They produced Amazon's One Mississippi and TBS's cancelled-before-airing The Cops and Wayward Pines/The Cool Kids for FOX (albeit that's a sister channel, but still, interesting that it has both FXP and 20th in its companies for those two)

level 1

I read the book this was based on a few months back and this is a major disappointment in comparison. It's also a pretty big step back in quality from Simon Rich's last show (Man Seeking Woman) imo. Not going to continue watching this one.

level 2

Damn, I was mainly looking forward to this on the strength on Man Seeking Woman (although this lacks Krisel from what I can tell). Still will give it a shot eventually.

level 1

It feels like it has some potential to be a fun series. It is really cheesy though it kind of works and so far I like the actors in their roles.

I thought it was pleasant and cute and has a really fun cast. It's only 7 episodes, so I'm in for the whole season.

I agree. It was optimistic, and reminded me that miracles don't have to be big. I hope it sticks around.

Why people downvote everything that's even slightly unpopular? People shouldn't have their opinion or what?

level 3

Does your right to an opinion compel me to like your opinion?

level 4

Theres a difference between disliking an opinion and burying one from view of others

level 5

No there literally the fuck isn't. That's the point of downvotes, it's synonymous with disliking a comment.

level 6

No it isn't. Downvoting is supposed to be used when you think something does not contribute to the conversation:

https://reddit.unblocksites.space/wiki/reddiquette#wiki_in_regard_to_voting

Under "Please don't":

Downvote an otherwise acceptable post because you don't personally like it. Think before you downvote and take a moment to ensure you're downvoting someone because they are not contributing to the community dialogue or discussion. If you simply take a moment to stop, think and examine your reasons for downvoting, rather than doing so out of an emotional reaction, you will ensure that your downvotes are given for good reasons.

level 7

Lol rediquette

The vast majority of comments contribute nothing.

level 8

That's very true, I just wanted to point out that the downvote button is not a "disagree button".

level 9

But that's what makes it a defacto disagree button, the site would collapse if rediquette was a real thing that was enforced across hundreds of thousands, if not millions of shitposts

level 3

Probably because he’s accusing people of being astroturfers just for liking the show, which is dumb

The trailer was pretty bad/cheesy, so I didn't have high hopes- but it was a lot better than I expected! Not amazing, but entertaining. Obviously it was all set up, so presumably once more stuff starts happening it'll also get better, but we'll see I guess.

level 1

Probably could be a little funnier, but I love the concept and Daniel Radcliffe’s character in this so far lol. Definitely looking forward to his arc. Also who doesn’t love Steve Buscemi?

“Jordan!” Lol
