Edge of Extinction Castaway Assessments | Reem Daly & Rick Devens

In anticipation of the premiere of Survivor: Edge of Extinction we will be making a stickied post over the next nine days to discuss two contestants a day. These threads will provide a resource for everyone to get to know the contestants better before seeing them on our televisions.

Please give your opinions, predictions, impressions or whatever else you’d like to share about Reem and Rick in this thread. We will save it as a ‘time capsule’ and link back after they are eliminated (or named Sole Survivor) to see how opinions have changed.

Reem is fun, but I think we all know Reem is not winning Survivor. She seems like a throwback to the Wendy Jo or Sandy Burgin type, both of which were similarly doomed. I liked that she said her strategy was "not get voted out"...sounds stupid, but sometimes it really is just that simple.

Rick is one of only two newbies that was prominently featured in the promo, so I'd assume he's going to be an important character this season. He has a big, goofy personality and seems very funny and engaging. He might end up being the "Big movez for the sake of it" player, but hopefully not.

So the last 3 winners have all been the first person we heard from in the season trailer.

I’m sure they wouldn’t do that again, so why not the 2nd person 🤔

That was Wendy

Well that’s my point, they clearly want to feature the winner but that’s obvious now. So they stick the winner 2nd. The mind games.

Reem is kinda weird but I can't see her making it past the merge. She's not winning either.

Rick is going to make it far not sure how far though. He seems like someone who's fun loving but likely lose cause he's just doesn't seem like some who'd win. He's similar to Dr. Mike honestly.

Reem has the most pun-friendly name since So and a voice like Sue Hawk. Of course I love her. She seems like her own kinda cat. She's probably a bit sassy and eccentric. She'd be a great addition to any office. Unfortunately, that puts her squarely in Diane Ogden, Tina Schreer, Katrina Radke country and means I won't be picking her for my fantasy team. I wish I could.

Rick has the highest potential to be a future Survivor Hero of any newbie on the cast. He's the geek, but not a virgin or a panicked social recluse. He's charming, confident and professionally successful. He reminds me of Josh Wigler. I think he's capable of Penner-esque levels of narration. He represents the New South in a way that's exciting to me as a Southerner. Hopefully he's as magnetic of a social player as I imagine him to be and he makes the finale, because if so he'll be a major highlight on a season that needs some.

I enjoy Reem, but as others have stated there's a very little chance Reem actually is gonna win. Both due to her being the oldest woman on her tribe, but also due to her self proclaimed big mouth & attitude. I might think she could skate by for a while, but at some point, I just think she'll start getting more & more annoyed while also irritating her tribe in the process. Hope I'm wrong, but definitely thinking she's a pre-merge boot.

Rick is interesting. I feel like he probably is the guy who everybody either really will like or not gel with at all, no real in between. If people see him as funny & as an asset for the team I think he probably could have a really easy run to make it to the merge, but if people don't really like him or feel that he's too theatrical/forced I could see him out quickly despite what good qualities he might bring. Nevertheless, I at least expect him to bring it entertainment wise. IMO he's probably the newbie who I think looks most interesting on paper. So stoked to see him regardless whether he's an early out or a later-gamer

Rick is a fantastic casting choice. He's charismatic, bright and for the most part comes across as humble. Knowing his history but not hiding behind it. He should hold his own in the game. With that said I do detect a hint of hubris growing as he grows comfortable with his interviewer and while he initially comes across as humble I'm nervous that this hubris will come across as the game goes on. He's a great character but will that translate to a great player? I'm not entirely sure, he should win most FTC combinations he finds himself in.

Reem on the other hand strikes me as white Laurel but where Laurel interviewed well pregame with a good bio and managed to disappoint when she was finally in the game. Reem both interviews poorly and her bio honestly feels like a complete fabrication. She's a premerge boot or FTC goat and with how stacked the other tribe is, I'm leaning towards the former.

Reem strikes me as quirky, with a slightly abrasive exterior, who tells it like it is, and is not interested in conforming to fit in or please other people. That makes a wonderful Survivor character. Unfortunately it does not bode well for her Survivor longevity.

I think Reem has to be an early boot and Rick I could see going far

Reem is going to Natalie Napalm it. And Im so ready for it.

Reem is first boot a pretty high percentage of the time, especially since we have the knowledge that the likely other contender on her tribe, Wendy, got an introduction in the season preview. I think she'd be really fun to have a night out with, but she seems like cannon fodder on Survivor. If David and Wentworth see her as too much of a wildcard, she's done.

I think Rick is going to be super fun to watch. I see him having quite a bit of initial success socially, I think his plan could well be to form strong bonds and let others make the early decisions. Somewhere down the line though, he's going to have to cut people he likes, and I suspect he might struggle to manage this as well as a more emotionally calculated player might. It's not impossible that he can win, but I think he might end up deciding who the likely winner is by a move he makes post merge.

Rick comes across as a loveable goofball but I think he's going to come in and play this game hard. He's going to be better in challenges than first impressions would indicate, and he's going to be a social and strategic beast. My money is on Rick finding multiple idols and playing them. Will make it far in my opinion and will be the breakout star of the season who will return multiple times.

Reem seems like the kind of person that does her own thing and is really happy without caring about what others think. She's going to be a joy to watch if she sticks around, but unfortunately I see her taking Katrina's route.

Rick is one of my favourites and I almost had him as my winner pick. He's confident without being cocky, he's charismatic, funny, clearly comfortable in front of the camera, but doesn't have that huge neon sign of "I'm a threat" that Christian had last season. I think he'll go far (if it's in his power) and I'm all for it.
