2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profiles: The Amazon

Welcome to the 2019 Survivor Fallen Angel Profile series!

In these threads, we encourage in-depth discussion about the "fallen angels" throughout Survivor history, counting down from the most recent to the original. In this context, a fallen angel is the last player eliminated prior to Final Tribal Council.

What allowed these players to make it to the end game? What are the reasons they fell short? Were they legit threats or coattail riders? How close were they to winning? Who would they have won or lost against had they made it to Final Tribal Council? How was their gameplay, narrative, story, edit, competition, and former or later seasons (if applicable)? What's their Survivor legacy? Are they overrated or underrated as a player and a character? Will they ever return?

These threads are meant for in-depth discussion, not low-effort content. We encourage people to post their detailed thoughts after reflecting on these fallen angels and their paths through the game.

Today's topic: Survivor: The Amazon fallen angel Rob Cesternino.

  • Method of Elimination: Voted out at F3

  • Individual Immunities won: 1/8

  • Tribal Councils Attended: 11/14

  • Votes Against: 4

  • Correct Votes: 10/11

It's interesting that in back to back seasons, the fallen angel of said season was quite possibly the most revolutionary and entertaining character in Survivor history up until that point.

Both Rob and FairPlay changed the face of Survivor in their seasons, and both could easily be named the best player to never win. The strategies and tactics that these two men used are still being used to this very day.

And Fairplay heavily based his game on Rob. I miss when JFP was a fun heel and not a cringey shirt salesman.

I still need to get around to seeing Survivor Amazon. I've heard great things about it but I've never watched it.

Rob Cesternino is probably one of my favorite players in Survivor, just for RHAP alone. On top of being a great strategic person, he was a great character as well.

Was crazy hearing that he was almost on Big Brother 3 instead of Survivor Amazon. Thank goodness he was on Survivor (I say this as a huge Big brother fan btw).

level 2

Only thing that sucks is hulu is missing like 3-4 episodes of the season which included some iconic boots and moments but it holds up to me on a rewatch other than being a little sexist and misogynistic at times.

And I like Rob, especially now for all he does for the survivor community but I think he was given a little too much credit for his survivor game in Amazon. He probably would have and deserved to win if he was in the final two but to call him the smartest to never win and all the praise he got from Jeff at the time and from fans afterward is a little overkill. Good player though no doubt

If you look at it in the context of season 6 he was the smartest to play and never win. No one had come out onto survivor and played the middle yet, a tactic that almost every winner since him has been able to do.

Like obviously since then it's exaggerated but for him to go out there and play like that, also at like 23 or however young, was revolutionary

Yeah I said he’s good but my opinion still is it’s a little exaggerated how good he was. Especially since many good players are also underrated.

Who in the first 5 seasons played as well as Rob had without winning?

One of my favorite players of all time and a true game changer. The way rob regularly flipped on his alliances to benefit himself was revolutionary

It is no exaggeration to say that Rob C revolutionised Survivor. Prior to Amazon, the only ever major power shift to exist in the history of the show occurred when the Marquesas Five overthrew the Rotu Four. Thanks to Rob’s ground-breaking cross-tribal strategy, Survivor became a game where the way to win was no longer to get a post-merge majority and ride it to the end. I personally consider Rob’s game to be up there as one of the best non-winning ones of all time, so I’m excited to take another look.

Rob started on the all-Male tribe of Tambaqui and was quickly appointed in the majority alliance of Roger, Butch, Dave, Alex and himself. Critically, Rob recognised that he was never going to win within this alliance, but he played ball to ensure that he survived the entire pre-swap portion of the game. During this period, he voted off Ryan and Dan Lue, whilst Roger has since confirmed that Rob would have survived a third Tribal for Tambaqui (Matt would have gone).

At F12, Jenna and Dave organised a tribal swap and Rob was sent to Jaburu with Matt and Alex. Here is where is his game really started to flourish - recognising the swap as an important opportunity, Rob build a very important bond with Deena (and a lesser, albeit significant one with Jenna) with the aim of forming a post-merge majority against Roger, Dave and Butch. Together with Matt, who was becoming a close confidant of Rob’s, Rob, Deena and Jenna voted off Shawna right before the merge, allowing Rob to keep a pretext of loyalty to Roger.

The huge 7-person alliance formed by Rob and Deena turned on Roger and Dave at the merge leading to Rob being in a decent, but not perfect position. Rob’s big advantage during this period of the game is that his flexibility gave him a number of options - he had connections and control over Butch and Matt, he had his alliance with Deena and he was in with Alex, Jenna and Heidi as well. Inevitably, the huge alliance began to break up with Deena and Alex targeting other, leaving Rob being forced to choose sides. He ended up voting out Deena, which is questionable on the surface, but it did free up Christy to be a rob pawn, albeit a volatile one.

Rob’s F7 move is one of my favourite moves pre-All Stars. It is admittedly a little obvious and he was lucky that Alex was so obvious about his intentions but this move takes him from a rock-solid alliance where he was 4th to an alliance where he’s in control of the greatest batch of followers left in the game, with only six left. Then of course, we have the Christy vote, which was a great innovation of taking power away from the swing vote. (A small note is that Rob should have probably included Butch in the vote to avoid the possibility of the girls voting him out but he did mitigate the risks well)

Going into F5, Rob was in a fantastic position, in an alliance of three where he would have won in any scenario where Butch doesn’t win the FIC. Unfortunately, an unforeseen immunity run from Jenna (who had seemingly given up) put his game in danger and ultimately saw his ejection from the game at F3. Even with this, he did brilliantly well to move the target to Butch at F4, where the logical move for everyone left was to vote him out.

Personally, I think Rob would have beaten any of his end-game opposition, even Jenna (I think he gets Christy, Deena, Matt and Butch). He was a huge jury threat and would have crushed Matt (probably 6-1 with the same votes as with Jenna). This is a big area that I have him above the likes of FairPlay; he was a huge, huge threat to win and, as I say, it’s only thanks to Jenna’s unlikely immunity run that scuppered this.

Overall, I think Rob played a game on a par with Malcolm and Cirie, especially when you consider the context of when he played. He played a game that stacks up to some of the best of all time, in an era when turning on your tribe was considered to be a fast way to lose the game. Rob’s unprecedented flexibility allowed him to hold several different alliances until he committed to the one that could and should have won him the game. The only thing that prevented him from winning was a very unlikely immunity run and I think, for that, his game deserves to be up there with the very best.

I would love to see him play again. But even after 30+ seasons he'd still be an immediate target and would probably be voted out immediately.

I feel like the only situation where he'd come back is that if he had a fighting shot to win. He always seems to brush it aside when people ask him because he'd have no nothing to gain by playing again if he'd be targeted so early.

But if it was some sort of "Best to Never Win" or "Winners vs Legends" where everyone was intimidating, he'd have a better shot.

I feel like we're much more likely to see him on a reality all stars version of Big Brother than we are to ever see him on Survivor. The man hasn't gone outside since 2013.

Yeah it's totally cast-dependent but I have a hard time seeing him being targeted before people like Tony Vlachos, Sandra, Parvati, Boston Rob, Cirie, Hatch, etc. That's not a knock, just saying that there are a pretty sizable chunk of people out there with similar or bigger reputations, and definitely people who are now regarded as sneakier/more devious.

His "threat level" is mostly just tied to his intelligence and ability to play both sides, but since that's a part of nearly everyone's game now (instead of being fairly unique around the time of All-Stars), he hardly stands out in the way that he once would have. My biggest concern if I was playing with him would just be that he's so deep in the Survivor community that he's bound to have a pre-existing relationship with just about every person who could possibly be on the island.

level 4

Yeah frankly I think RHAP has a big enough role in the survivor community that I think Rob still might be a massive threat if he were to return. It's quite unfortunate but frankly he'd need a lot of luck if he'd go back.

Maybe even more so now than ASS. Few have his stature in the current Survivor world.

I hope he never plays survivor again because I don't know how I would watch a season without listening to him on RHAP! And to think his real goal was to be on Big Brother. Rob if you ever get onto it (hopefully celebrity) I'll definitely watch you

I feel like the only thing stopping him from going on big brother is that it's a really long game, and he has young children. i wouldn't be surprised to see him on BB when his kids are a little older.

Not only did he revolutionize the game's strategy, he was also a top tier narrator. His confessionals are legitimately hilarious. Between being a great player and a great character, he's an easy top 10 all time survivor.

The most important player in survivor history affer Hatch. Really loved his moves in flipping against his alliance at 7 then bringing back former alliance into the fold and killing the swing vote at final6. Possibpy the funniest contestant ever and has the best confessionals/ voting confessionals of all time. The roger vote and the heidi vote demonstrate how hilarious this guy is.

My favourite player of all time, no questions. And not because of the podcast. Didnt know about that until 2 years ago. But he is one of many reasons Amazon is the best season of all time

Rob C was easily the best player on this season, and had complete control over the game right up until Jenna's unlikely final immunity wins.

He was the first person to:

- Bring a strategic personal item into the game

- Use a tribe-swapped alliance to blindside his original tribe

- Flip from that alliance for a higher placement

- Vote out the risky swing vote (Christy)

- Bring a loyal goat to the end of the game (Matthew)

- Use that goat to control yet another player (Butch)

Rob's game was pretty much flawless, hampered only by a shock recovery from a very ill Jenna Morasca.

Most will name Rob C and Fairplay as the great early non-winners, and I'd throw Kathy in there too for her lot of interesting firsts.

What really cements Rob as one of the great Survivor voices is his work on RHAP, particularly for The Evolution of Strategy which is a showcase for just how brilliant and calculating he is. Essential listening for all potential Survivor players.

strategic personal item into the game

Except for Colby

Flip from that alliance for a higher placement

Except for Paschal and Neleh

Bring a loyal goat to the end of the game

Except for Brian

He's good, but come on
