complete fucking garbage. not the movie, movie wasn't good, but not that bad. but larson's performance is atrocious. wow. talk about miscast. stiffest, most awkward portrayal of a superhero ever.

Honestly I think it was just terrible writing. When you write a character who's only reaction to anything is 馃槒 then people are gonna blame the acting, but I think they could pull a Thor and make her interesting

level 3

hmm. true, she was written terribly. still would've liked to have seen better though. guess we'll have to see how the next one goes.

its one of the worst MCU movies, it had some good moments and i liked the "shield origins" part, but other than that, it was very cringy sometimes and overall really boring, also Captain Marvel as a hero is something that i don't think we need, it has all the flaws of Superman, she is just too damn powerful, it doesn't give space for any real good plot.

Spot on. This is how I felt as well. I liked the movie more as Nick Fury's origin story than anything else.

level 1

This movie was great, it's like having a better looking version of Bruce Willis in Die Hard 3 again with Samuel L. Jackson as the sidekick. Plus it ties into Endgame so bonus.

Brie Larson is my favorite main hero since they didn't make her seem too different from a regular person (once she learned she isn't a Kree of course) unlike Tony who is a billionaire, or Professor Banner who is a genius, or frigging DOCTOR STRANGE who has a weird last name and studies effin' magic. She's kinda like Peter Parker or Miles Morales just an ordinary woman who overcame bullies and adversity to grow into a hero after a freak science accident gave her Great Powers/Great Responsibility. And she's hot as fire!

Maybe unpopular opinion, but I jusy dont really like captain marvel much as a character. The thing that makes marvels hero's so engaging is their humanity. Captain marvel is just too overpowered. It's like the superman of the marvel universe when the marvel universe doesnt need a superman-like character. This problem was compounded for me by how flat captain marvels emotions were in this movie. There werent enough complex emotions from her, not a progressive character arc just, hey "I cant remember stuff, also I can fly across literally the ENTIRE UNIVERSE and am invincible". Disagree with me please, but I just think it's written as an imbalanced character for the mcu.

Too much talking

level 1

I thought this was one of the best of the MCU films, which I'm generally a bit "Yeah that was good but what's all the fuss about?" towards. Found it more humorous than the others too.

level 1

Took my kids (9yo girl and 13yo boy) to see it last night, and they really enjoyed it. I thought it was legitimately bad.

  • I know Brie Larson can act, I'm sure I've seen her do so, but most of the time she was mechanically reading lines. It didn't even feel like a choice, so much as she was just bored. Even the laugh lines, where she was supposed to be playing confident, came across as 'meh' (Neutral tone, emotionless face " Hey, does anyone know how to get these things off? No?" Smirk). I think it was the direction, because several other actors seemed off as well (but none quite as Kristen-Stewart-in-Twilight as Brie).

  • I'm pretty sure the director's were terrible. The tone was insanely inconsistent, the narrative was all over the place, the actors all seemed off (Brie, especially), and nothing felt engaging.

  • The writing was Lifetime Movies level bad.

    • The scenes that show men trying to hold her down were written with the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the face ("Don't you know, GIRL'S CAN'T DRIVE GOKARTS/PLAY BASEBALL/FLY JETS/etc.!"), capped with a women's deodorant ad, where every iteration or Carol gets up and stares defiantly at the camera to prove that women can't be held down! Hey, remember when exactly zero people's big complaint about Wonder Woman was that girls just can't be badasses?

    • I'm trying to think of specific lines that weren't terrible, but I'm having trouble. Then again, if the direction was the problem, it would clarify why they sounded so bad.

  • The tone and pacing were all over the place. One minute, it's supposed to be serious, then it tries to be humorous, then, it suddenly shifts into serious, and there's no transition in-between. It's not like standard Marvel fare, where there's a beat of comic relief at the point of highest tension; instead, it's just really uneven. I would forgive it if it made sense, but a lot of times, it just didn't. Characters aren't even played consistently, especially Carol. Most of the time, she's a coldblooded bruiser, but she'll suddenly cracks jokes out of nowhere. It's like if Thor in the first Thor movie randomly spouted lines from Ragnarok, but with the same stoicism he said all his other lines.

  • The plot was handled horribly. If you're going to have a third act backstory reveal, WAIT UNTIL THE THIRD ACT. They should have either started with Carol as Vers with false memories, and made no mention of Earth until they actually arrive (at which point all the Kree who know her history start getting worried that she'll remember), or started with her on Earth as a pilot, introduce all the characters there, have the accident, and have her wake up with powers, but no memory, on the Kree homeworld (The thrust of the story would be her, and the audience, trying to figure out where the powers came from). As it was, we had to watch a bunch of characters pursue information we, as the audience, already had.

This movie actually has me worried for Endgame, primarily because the reviews for CM all seemed to be pretty high. Then again, the Russo's seem to know what they're doing, so there's no way I won't be seeing it. I just hope Carol actually works for me in the film. If she's done as poorly there as she was here, it's going to be a giant anchor weighing the film down.

level 2

As typical reddit, you get downvoted by speaking what you really think, instead of blindly praising like others.

I did the mistake of watching it today because I thought it was 鈥渘eeded鈥 to see endgame.

I found it without direction, several continuity errors and dare say boring. Plus adding all your observations.

At one point, it was clear that this was a disney movie instead of a marvel movie, if that makes sense.

level 3

Eh, if people want to downvote me, that's their prerogative. I don't get why they would, but I also realize that, in the end, it's just one post among millions.

I think "without direction" sums it up pretty well, and explains all the problems in this. I got to see Endgame, and Brie showed more emotion in the few moments she had on screen than all her scenes of Captain Marvel combined.

As has been oft repeated, a great director can make an amazing film from a terrible script, but a terrible director will always make a bad film, even with the best script in the world. I think if this script had been given to someone who knew how to make a compelling action film, it would have been vastly better. As it stands, I rate it as the worst of the Marvel movies (yes, even below Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2), and I have no desire to ever see it again.

level 1

Count me among those who watched this just to be caught up to go see endgame in a couple of hours.

Also count me as those who were rather unimpressed. It seems they telegraphed every twist a mile away. I really hope she doesn't screw up endgame with her overpoweredness.

level 2

Same here. I saw the show today at the Tuesday $5 show, so basically a better presentation for about the same as renting on Amazon. I got my $5 worth but I really didn't like the plot line. Also I had a problem with a civilization that has wormhole travel but is trying to discover FTL?????? Big step backwards. Really they need to consult a physicist to come up with plausible science. I did like how they gave her a mission to take up the time between when she first came to Earth and Endgame. Seemed like they made Nick Fury about 20 years younger. Decent but not great.

I went to see this movie on Friday in preparation for Endgame and honestly I thought it was kind of bad. After I got home I watched Ant Man and The Wasp and thought it was way better.

level 2

I did the exact same thing but approximately one week after you, it seems. I felt the exact same way.

Yeh just watched it the other to prep for endgame too, thought it was mediocre verging on bad.
