Yo Rex and Emmet had the same clothes. https://imgur.com/a/RP12FW8 It was right under our fucking noses

I'm an older brother to a sister and this movie hit me hard.

I think if you do have a brother or sister, it's going to be a very different movie for you than it would be for someone else, as it was for me. I think that applies to really every movie. Judging a movie (especially giving it a numerical rating) to establish whether is objectively good or bad is a terrible exercise because is movies will mean different things to different people for different reasons. Every person is going to see the same movie but they're going to interpret it in different ways just like when you're talking to someone and they take your meaning differently from what you actually meant.

I think this movie is the ultimate example of that.

level 1

Alright I know this is a bit old. But this movie just reminded me how shit of an older brother I am; in the third act when they bring in the real-life stuff. Kinda made me feel like crap.

level 2

My thoughts exactly.

Just saw it yesterday. I agree with most people here saying it wasn't as good as the first one. Still an enjoyable film though. The songs were really great I think as well. Saw that Jon Lajoie did the music, which is great, cause his stuff is always great and it shows in this film. Also noticed Rex's voice was Chris Pratt doing a Kurt Russell impersonation. Not sure if people have mentioned that which was funny.

Late to the party but took the kids to this and compared to the first one, it was underwhelming. Time travel? Really? This could've been easily fixed as the original toy being replaced by another one, but the time travel shit felt shoved in, and the story just felt off the whole time. I just feel that time travel stories popping out of nowhere just suck.

level 2

I mean, the kid had already said he was doing a time travel plot line.

I can't believe it's already been 5 years since the first Lego movie. Looking at the comments it seems like a lot of elements in this movie are not as universally enjoyed as the first one. For me, I liked the music and Tiffany Haddish's work as Queen Watevra. I found the songs to be catchy with clever tongue-in-cheek compositions in reference to modern pop music. It's like a higher production Bob's Burgers music style. And Tiffany played a convincing sassy not-a-villain type character well.

The story and script in this movie didn't seem to be as tight as the first film. The first third had fast cuts with kind of a slow moving plot pace. I'm still trying to pinpoint why its pacing felt so strange but all I can say is it has room for improvement.

As for the jokes and gags I found they got better as the movie progressed. The raptors were hilarious and the quip about Radiohead was killer. Bruce Willis making vent jokes was phenomenal. Also, everyone can relate to the stepping on Lego bit.

Overall I'd say I definitely enjoyed this more than Wreck it Ralph 2 and Incredibles 2 making it a solid above average film. Worth watching again some time later this year but not before an Into The Spiderverse repeat.

Sorry for the question about something subjective, but how could you enjoy this more than the other two movies you mentioned?

I mean, even though WiR2 broke part of the lore of the first movie, it introduced a nice (and very accurately and lovely detailed) new concept and both were basically at their core simple female empowerment movies, at least they had something to say. LM2 seems so... empty and rushed overall. Many things breaking as well, like how the father seems to not at all care about LEGO anymore (even though just a few years ago he was very invested in it, obviously) or how the concept of two plots related to each other mentally feels completely off in this one. Most importantly, since it is so dependent on the medium (and this was the strength of the first movie) would anything of the plot change if it was literally any other toy being showcased?

tl;dr I do not understand how you can prefer a pretty meaningless movie to two well thought-out and coherent ones, even though maybe not everyone agrees to the message or is tired of seeing it everywhere.

Finally saw part 2. I liked it but not as much as the 1st films

The good

  • New characters

  • I liked the plot twist

  • "Catchy Song" is way better than "Everything is awesome"

The Bad

  • I didn't like that Tiffany Haddish as the voice for the queen. I didn't find any of her parts funny

  • The song to make Batman marry her was hit garbage

  • Maybe because I'm older now, but that kid looked way too old to be playing with Legos.

  • Will Ferrell was always off screen. I bet he wished he was actually on screen instead of in that crappy movie that bombed.

40’s and still playing with Lego. I sort of stopped at 15 due to self consciousness, but I got over myself.

Uh I dont know what you are talking about. You are never too old to be playing with legos.

level 1

still don't get what the deal was with the duplo aliens.

level 2

What do you mean?

They were the little sister trying to play with the Lego. Because she was only about 3 or 4, she had Duplo. And she wrecked everything she tried to play with because she was unable to be careful.

level 3

why were they so overpowered tho?

level 4

The little sister was just breaking stuff because she was clumsy or whatever.

When the older brother tried to play with her, he would do things like say, "They shot a laser at you," and then the sister would go, "I ate the laser."

level 5

Yeah, the "I ate the laser" bit really brought back memories of my brothers and I playing as kids.

level 5

oh ok

level 1

The movie was better with the second viewing.

level 1

I am disappointed with the role of the dad in the film. Why did he have to be a joke dad and be out of the story? Lego missed a better chance to appeal to the older audience who will spend $$$ on the-ins.

level 2

Scheduling conflict probably, the work he did voice wise was probably an hour or two of work in a recording booth which he could do anywhere in the world (like a different film set) to be on set for the live action stuff would probably be more like a couple of weeks which he didn't have available.

level 2

Perhaps Will Ferrell asked for too much money and it was cheaper to just pay him for voice overs instead.

level 1

Raptors being in love with tennis was the hardest I've laughed at a movie in a long time.

level 1

So I me and some coworkers were promised an advanced screening (hasn't come out here) and we were kept in the dark about what movie it would be. We all secretly hoped for Captain Marvel but when this started I was expecting a Ralph Breaks The Internet Situation. A pretty solid movie with cool humour and moments but falls short of its predecessor. This seems to be what others thought but I thought this was just as good as the first one. The cast was awesome, the songs were a joy, the emotional moments hit so hard for me. The first 20 minutes or so was where I thought meh but the movie got better and better as it went on. Favourite of 2019 so far. 8.5/10
