Thoughtful Thursday! - February, 21 2019

Welcome to this week's Thoughtful Thursday thread! Also known as "No Stupid Questions"

Thoughtful Thursday - a post idea by u/davidgillilandfan38 for all fans to ask whatever NASCAR-related question they want answered in hopes to get an explanation for something they've been unsure of. No question is too stupid! Want to know why the cars drive left around ovals instead of right or why the cars don't have headlights (they're just stickers!)? Or maybe you want to know something more technical that someone with more experience might know? This thread is for you! Ask below!

Serious answers only, please!

Who is this Jacob company and why do they sponsor so many cars? Not that I have a problem with it, but usually a sponsor sticks with one team. Is the owner involved in nascar, or just a huge race fan?

level 2

Construction firm that was involved in the construction of Metlife, Gillette, and Sunlife Stadiums.

So are they involved in the sport, or just big race fans?

level 4

They built the Chevrolet Daytona Experience at DIS and are the Official Contruction Company of NASCAR.

Some of their sponsorship and work also extends to other series, particularly with Ganassi, like helping to expand CGR's IndyCar shop and sponsoring their Global Rallycross team when the series was still around.

Can someone tell me what barstool is and why it’s making such a impact? I get it’s a talk show but that’s about it

level 2

Sports network with a ton of shit and fart jokes, oh and pizza reviews

Their content tends to appeal to the 18-25 year old men especially College males, their social media affected the 500 due their massive followings across social media, they advertised the 500 and by that a broader audience was being something new that they haven't seen before the 32% rating boost the Boston and D.C. Television Markets. By the end it proved to be a win/win as Barstool President said he wants to go and bring Barstool to Talladega and Bristol and more of the same audience with him to these tracks showing racing on a bigger track like Dega' and a smaller track like Bristol. Hope this helped :)

Barstool is a bit of an alternative sports media outlet. I relies on being independent and online to be able to do whatever it wants. It resonates a lot with younger demos because it avoids a lot of the pitfalls and cliches of mainstream sports media (see any personality driven show on ESPN). Personally I don't like it, but I know a lot of people my age (young 20s) that will only go to barstool for news, since they feel it has REAL personality. Another thing to consider of barstool is that they have large north east and mid west followings. They focus a lot on the big sports up there and play up to the college demographics of the region.

Not a question, but I’m noticing that Fantasy will automatically keep last weeks picks as your picks for the next race, so if you happen to forget to change them before the race starts, you’re stuck with losing a use on your drivers from last week. And personally, I thought that Atlanta just hadn’t opened yet and it was still showing my Daytona picks, but instead it just preloaded them into Atlanta. Just a heads up.

level 2

I noticed that too when looking in my fantasy lineup. Just remember to change them!

What driver holds the record for the most cup series starts?

level 2

Richard Petty with 1,184 starts.

The 10 drivers with most Cup starts

Thanks :)

level 2

Unsurprisingly, Richard Petty. Dude has 1,185 starts

What advantages do dirt backgrounds and pavement backgrounds have against each other?

One theory on dirt is that the driver deals with so many changing conditions (track, car, tires) that teaches him/her to adapt and develop a sixth sense for them. That happens in asphalt racing too, but it’s more concentrated on dirt. So when you get to asphalt, which is less drastic, you theoretically have an advantage in finding grip, adapting, and pushing the limits of a car. Case in point: Kyle Larson, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon. Case not-in-Point: Kyle Busch

Dirt drivers are wheelmen -DW

Honestly nothing specific about the skills learned. The biggest difference is the driver can make up for a weak car to a much greater extent on dirt, so the dirt standouts typically really are badass drivers. On asphalt, the quality of the equipment and the setup is the most important aspect of performance. The standouts are typically the ones with the most money and best crew chiefs and technical minds who are at least above average drivers, but a lot of driving talent goes unrecognized and the “top drivers” sometimes aren’t really great behind the wheel.

Where can I find the Green flag time for each race? Not when coverage starts but the actual green flag time.
E.G. They list 2PM everywhere for this weekend, but Green Flag time is probably something like 2:17.

It was the only thing I used Jayski for the last couple seasons, but now I can't find them listed in one place.

I think in the past I've seen some of the media(Bob Pockrass and Jeff Gluck are the 2 I remember most) tweet them during the weekends.

A general rule I find that for most races it's 15(shorter tracks) to 20(longer tracks) minutes after the TV coverage comes on. The only times it doesn't seem to follow that pattern is if weather is coming then they might move up the start so the Green Flag is closer to when they come on TV. The other is the big races like the 500 last week or Homestead. They have that whole hoopla surrounding the event so they end up running late.

Would you say that A.J. Allmendinger built up some semblance of a fanbase during his time in the #47?

level 1

When did the idea of identifying a champion on the series logo badge of their firesuit like this (which I really liked btw, I wish the new patches had some iteration of this) start to come about? It's very cool but the whole idea of that seems random to me.

level 2

I think that started to be a thing when Nextel was switched to Sprint, that's the earliest I can find it at least

I don't know how to link on mobile, but there are some photos of Dale Earnhardt with a 7 time Winston Cup champion if you search Google. So it was even earlier than that
