I get that there should always be some kind of discipline for a hit to the head, but the fact that everyone is calling for McDavid to get a game while Anders Lee DOESN'T EVEN GET A PHONE CALL FOR SLASHING NURSE IN THE FACE. Obvious malicious intent and he could have taken an eye out but nobody seems to give a shit. In fact here most of you are talking like McDavid should get a game, when he has next to no history of being a dirty player. I get it the team's been disapointing this year but if we're not gonna support the best player in the league when he makes what was clearly a mistake then we don't deserve him. Not like fucking Islanders fans in r/hockey being openly proud of the way Lee acted last game, but if you honestly think McDavid should get more than max fine and a serious warning, please go follow some other dirtbag team like the Ducks and see what kind of shit other, non-star players are getting away with every second game.

If the team wins convincingly on Saturday I honestly expect a playoff push to begin. I don't know if that's the right move, but I would not at all be surprised if management looks at the standings, the return of Sekera, and a resurging Gagner and decides that they have a real chance. TO BE CLEAR: NOT ADVOCATING, JUST SPECULATING.

I'm hoping that in this case they look for moves that bring in long term players at the deadline instead of rentals. I think a move for Pageau in Ottawa might be a solid one. Someone mentioned Jesper Fast on, I think, Lowetide. Also seems like a solid add. Neither should require giving up too much. Maybe a 3rd?

If we can negotiate a Marcus Johansson extension, then I would be very down to trade for him at the right price as well (2020 1st?)

All these trades probably require salary out though. I would happily try and cash Chiasson and then replace him with a longer term improvement.

It's over my dude.

level 3

They're six points back with a game in hand. Win tomorrow and they're four points back.

I'm the last person to chug the hopium, but it would be the most Oilers thing ever if they decided to drive the tank the wrong way and fuck their draft position by going on a monster run and just missing the wildcard by a point or two.

That being said, look at Chicago and St. Louis right now - it's possible.

level 4

I know it is mathematically possible but when one examines the roster and lack of NHL talent, the single win in like ten games? It seems unlikely they go on a heater. They would have to win like 18 games to make it to 92 pts which is a likely number. Don't give up friend, but it looks bleak.

92 is almost certainly not the number this year. It's on pace to be 83.

Also, you're on a streak of misinterpreting what people think is going to happen vs what they want to happen.

level 6

Hope you are correct, but they just don't have the horses.

level 7

It just seems unlikely that all of the teams ahead of them are worse down the stretch. Seems pretty unlikely.

It really isn't.

Jesus, this attitude makes no sense to me. Will we make it? Probably not. But do you even enjoy cheering for this team?

Why the hell do you even watch if you don't keep some hope they can win? This is just nonsense.

level 4

Hope died when they won their third game in a month. Feel free to tell me how to fan though. They likely need to win 18 games out of their last 22.

level 4

Devils advocate, but I think there's an argument to be made that losing and being sellers at the deadline is the better move for the team longterm.

Trade your Chiassons and Kassians for picks, then in the summer package those picks with our numerous high-salaried boat anchors to get them off the books and clear up some cap space. Also the added benefit of drafting higher.

Sure but all of that is speculative too and you might not even be able to accomplish it. Then you're stuck with trying to lose and getting nothing for it.

You should never want to lose. And honestly, they have played a number of very good games in a row. Unfortunately, lots were losses but there's no reason to think they can't keep that level of play going.

level 6

I'm not sure if "it might not happen" is a very solid rebuttal of anything I said.

You weigh the probabilities and make a strategic decision - "you should never want to lose" is a strawman and no one is saying that except for you.

Besides, it's not about wanting to lose, it's just that losing in the shorterm is a likely byproduct of certain decisions.

To be clear, no player, fan, or manager wants the team to lose, but it's just a reality that trading guys for picks before the deadline would essentially mean the roster becomes thinner and we would likely lose more games down the stretch than if we kept them...

"Not wanting to lose" is a very simplistic way of looking at it, in my opinion.

Wasn't really a rebuttal just wanted to point out that it's just as guaranteed to help the team as say making the playoffs and actually instilling some confidence. It's not necessarily the best decision.

I just prefer to have this team make it and see what happens. Which we still could, probably not, but could.

Also you say no fan wants the team to lose but a lot of people in this sub prove that wrong...

By the way, I'm all for trading Chiasson no matter which way they go. If we can get a second for him we take that and run like hell.

I don’t think that making the playoffs does help this team long-term though, I see it like this, and I’m definitely making some assumptions:

Making the playoffs means we:

-Likely held onto Chiasson - who won't sign here next year

-Likely held onto Kassian

-Likely draft outside the top ten

-Somewhat likely that we traded either a prospect or the first round pick for some depth support

Not making playoffs means we:

-are more likely to have traded depth players with value for picks - which means more flexibility in the summer for a roster retooling

-are guaranteed to draft higher

-held onto our first round pick

-held onto our prospects

Like sure, we can say it’s confidence-building to make the playoffs, but since we’re talking in hypotheticals, it’s just as easy to say they fight tooth and nail to get in and sacrifice some pieces that would have helped them in the future only to get pummelled by San Jose or Calgary in the first round.

My perfect scenario is that the Oilers are sellers at the deadline and create flexibility for the roster retooling in the summer, and then despite the thinner roster finish the season strong - perhaps on the backs of guys like Gags and Reider - to build confidence into next season.

I don't think we trade Kassian either way.

I think we would only cash on UFAs tbh. I don't think the team sees us as going into a rebuild, I think the team wants to have as strong a roster as possible next year.

I understand people having this position.

I guess way back in my original comment I just don't understand people going "it's over" when it definitely isn't.

My fantasy dream ideal scenario is we make it and beat the flames in the first round somehow. I can dream! Lol

level 10

Agreed. A BOA would be fucking incredible, haha. We'll see how the next three or so games go. There definitely is some fire in the guys recently.

Don't tell me, tell management.

level 4

I don't have a direct line to Kretzky.

I am liking how the team played a lot last night. Love the line combo's and liked Gagner's game.

level 1

I'm glad that Gagner is back. I'm bummed out that we don't have Cagguila. While it still isn't perfect, I think a top-9 of:

Cagguila | McDavid | Drai

Gagner | RNH | Chiasson

Lucic | Khaira | Kassian

would have been a step up. Oh well, coulda woulda shoulda I suppose.
